Mystery Picture 2

I got most of you on mystery picture number one! Only one person looked at the picture and figured out what it really was. I liked Lucy’s spider eggs guess, and Donna’s corn on the cob, but not sure I want to take that spider egg photo or eat that corn on the cob!! Bees was a fun guess from Betty. And so was Peggy’s cactus guess. I can see where she might think that.We had guesses of grapes and cherries – some frozen. Frozen grapes are yummy when you’re hot in the summertime. And Gin changed it up a bit to guess mulberry.

gooseberries

Gooseberries

But the most popular guess was gooseberries. Mary even gave us the scientific name, Ribe uva-crispa. I had to google that to find out what she was guessing.  All the gooseberry guesses were wrong, but thinking about gooseberries took some people down a memory lane. And I strolled along with them.

I have never seen gooseberries on the vine or bush, but I did have the opportunity to try one once. Someone must have given Mom some. She warned me before I put it in my mouth to expect it to be tart. I think sour might be the more operative word. Very sour. That’s when they aren’t quite ripe. Mom said they had gooseberry bushes when she was a child and that she and the neighborhood kids would dare one another to eat one of the green gooseberries. Then they’d see who could keep from squinting. However, with enough sugar I think they made great gooseberry pies or jelly.

Green wild raspberries

But the mystery picture wasn’t a gooseberry. It was, as Amy correctly guessed, an unripe wild raspberry. Good eye, Amy. In a week or two, those berries will start turning black and they will be so sweet that instead of squinting, you do a little floating. Yum!  The trouble is, the deer like them too so sometimes they go berry picking ahead of me and pick the bushes clean.

And if you can gather enough of the little raspberries (wild ones are generally about the size of the tip of your little finger) and if you can keep from eating them all, you can freeze a pint or two to add to your blackberries when you’re making jam. Makes the jam so much sweeter.

Well, now that you know more about the berries than you ever wanted to, you can try to guess the new mystery puzzle. This may be one you all get and then I’ll have to pull out the heavy artillery for the picture on Wednesday.  LOL. I’ve got a doozy waiting in the wings, but I’m trying to decide if it’s fair for me to use it. But then, sometimes all is fair in love and war and mystery photo contests!

All of you who guessed got an entry in the drawing for a copy of one of my books. I’ll pick three winners on June 12th. You get a new entry each time you make a guess on a new mystery photo. You must be 18 to enter, but you can let your kids help you guess. 🙂 So come on and make a guess or be honest like Evelyn and just say “I don’t know.” She got an entry in the drawing too.

Thanks so much for playing my mystery photo game and as always, for reading.

P.S. Not sure how long it will last, but my 1st Hidden Springs mystery, Murder at the Courthouse, is on special e-book sale for 99 cents. (Always check your prices before you download to be sure you’re getting the bargain you want.) But if you e-read, this is a fun deal for you for a very limited time. Check it out on Amazon Kindle. Also available at other e-book sellers. Might be gone later today or tomorrow. I didn’t know it was going on sale until I saw it on BookBub, so have no idea when the price will go back up.

You are making the popular guess, Lois. You don’t see many white wall tires these days, but I remember back in the day that’s what people wanted to really make their cars look sharp. Especially those ’56 and ’57 Chevys.

You still get an entry, Karen, in the drawing. I promise it’s something that you’ve seen before or at least one very similar.

Hi, Emily. Fun that you came over to play my mystery photo game. An aerial view. Now that sounds very interesting. Could be, I have a drone with a camera. Could be. Check back Wednesday and see.

  1. This one is from a kids bike and its the old tire from that . At first it looked like steam coming from it but then i thought no it has to be a smaller tire . You got us on the last one it is funny how things close up look so different than far away!

Hi, Peggy. I did trick most of you on the last picture. I really thought maybe you’d all get this one. I’m not saying whether you have or not, but some of you have been coming up with some interesting guesses. That’s great. It makes the game more fun. I like that you saw that “steam.” 🙂

  2. A cake with small chocolate chips pressed gently into the top.

Btw, when I was a child gooseberries grew wild and we would pick them and mama would make a pie. I recall one time going out to pick some and a green snake was winding himself around the bush. Couldn’t eat the blueberries after that 🙂

You’re the second one guessing that chocolate chip on a cake, Loretta. So maybe you’re right. Maybe not.

I’ve seen snakes in my berry vines at times too, although I’ve never picked gooseberries. We had one in our cultivated raspberries once. Didn’t keep me from eating the berries, but did make me a little wary while I was picking. I did not eat blackberry jam for years after I saw a stink bug in the ones we were washing. I just could imagine us missing one and cooking it into the jam. I had too good an imagination. Made me miss out on some good blackberry jam and biscuits.

Pat, you got nice and specific about what kind of tire. That’s fun. And maybe right. Maybe not. I’m trying to be very mysterious.

Chocolate chips on the side of a cake. That sounds very interesting, Melissa, and as you say, yummy. We’ll see if your guess is close on Wednesday.

  3. I think it is a button . The silver is the back and the brownish bumpy looking stuff is the fabric on top. Maybe….I don’t know

  4. I guess I know my raspberries! Years of picking them at home and my grandparent’s house have paid off. Although I’ve never had wild ones. For the new photo, I’m stumped, but I’ll guess a toy tire.

Fun, Amy. You did certainly know your raspberries. I doubt if I would have guessed that picture even though I’ve picked plenty of the berries in my time and hope to pick some more soon. A toy tire is a good guess. Not saying it’s right, but it’s a nice guess, right or wrong. Glad you came back to guess on the new mystery photo.

Great guess, Karen. Not saying it’s right, but it’s a great guess, right or wrong. I do have a lot of flower pots and some of them are still in need of flowers. Hope you have fun playing my mystery photo game.

A strange chocolate cake in a bundt pan. Interesting guess, Marji. You and Margaret are making me hungry for chocolate. And it could be I was on a chocolate quest when I took this mystery photo. You won’t know until Wednesday. Thanks for playing my mystery photo game. Hope you have fun.

  5. I’m wondering if this is a close up of half an oreo cookie, with the frosting in the middle looking a little silver…

I love Oreos, Margaret. They seem to be the perfect mix of cookie and filling although some of my grandkids think the cookie part is just a disposable holder for the frosting they can lick off it. I like how you are thinking. And who knows? You might be right.

Glad you stopped by with a guess, Deana. I’ll let everybody know if anybody is right on Wednesday. Right now, it’s all a mystery!

  6. Tire is my first guess ~ except… the white wall seems awfully high. Hmm… with your magnification, what could it be… I guess I’ll have to stay with “Tire” ~ I think the background is a clue.

Happy, happy birthday, Kathleen. Sounds like you’re ready to enjoy. Hope you have a day of fun and blessings as you embrace the gift of a new year of life. Also, thanks for playing my mystery photo game. You never know where an old tire might show up. If, indeed, it is an old tire.
