Ann’s Amazing Mystery Photo Game

Mystery pic4I’m not sure how amazing it is, but I do hope you are having fun playing my mystery photo game. You should see me around here studying everything I see just so maybe, just maybe I can come up with a picture you don’t ALL guess. So far this round of mystery photos I’m doing fairly well. Only one person got the first mystery puzzle right and nobody got my mouse wheel. I guess I do have a unique mouse with a treaded wheel. Wouldn’t want my finger to slip. LOL.

However, I do admit that many of you were able to “solve” Wednesday’s mystery photo. There were two popular guesses. One was some sort of brush with various ideas of the the type of brush. Dishwashing brush was mentioned often. Bottle brush had a few guesses. Scrub brush came in there once. I do have one of them around here somewhere. With plenty of dust on it, I confess. I also have a baby bottle brush. I need it to clean my hummingbird feeder. But brush was not the right answer.

A few of you came up with very imaginative guesses. Lois said a dandelion right before it fuzzes or a caterpillar. Loved that dandelion fuzzy guess, Lois. Vicki guessed a sea cucumber. Sonja and Paula thought about a feather. I’ve considered trying to do a mystery photo of a feather, but the time I did the rooster, all of you guessed that. Linda said a corn bloom. That was a really good guess, but wrong. And I had to love Pat’s guess of a cheese grater with someone grating cheese. I’ll have to try that mystery photo some time, Pat.

Mystery pic3No, those of you who guessed the center of a flower were mostly right and those of you who said an iris were all the way right. Way to go, Peggy, Kristy, Sandy and Linda. Susan, whose son helped her guess, first said a Koosh ball or puffer caterpillar toy, but thought iris might be the best guess. Fun that she had her son helping her figure out the mystery.

So here’s the rest oIrisf the picture. A lovely iris after a rain. This is one that used to be out at our little country church. It’s the more old-fashioned looking iris without all the frilly edges.  We had to dig them up a few years ago because of water problems where they were planted next to the church building. So I brought some of them home to plant. Others also took home some bulbs. It’s neat to think about the women who probably brought starts from their yards to plant them at the church long ago. Our church has been in this building since 1889.

Back when I was a kid, we rarely called these flowers iris. We called them flags and most every yard that had flowers had some flags. We still have some at the church, but now they grow up out in the edges of the yard where some of the bulbs were pitched when they were dug out. It’s sort of neat to see them thriving on without any care on our part and blooming anyway. That has always been the beauty of iris. They do thrive on and bloom year after year.

Iris from PRI’m guessing many of you have iris starts from friends and relatives growing in your yard. I even have a start from a patch of iris I found way back in the woods. The blooms aren’t particularly pretty, but I don’t care. They have spread from one bloom to many here in my yard. I like seeing them and thinking about how somebody planted them so long ago that no sign of any people living anywhere near there remains. Except the iris, and they iris live on to prove that at some time way over a hundred years ago a woman wanted to make her yard prettier.

So, now I have a new mystery photo up top. And I’m ready for any and all attempts to solve this mystery. 🙂 This is the next to last mystery photo this game round. The last mystery photo will be on Wednesday. I’ve still got that photo I don’t think any of you can guess in the mystery photo batting circle. Still not sure I’d be playing fair to post it, but we’ll see. If you all guess this one, I may not want to play fair on Wednesday. LOL.

I’ll draw for three winners on Sunday and the winners will get their choice of one of my books, including my new mystery, Murder Comes by Mail.  You must be 18 to enter the drawing, but that doesn’t mean you can’t ask your kids for help figuring out the mystery. Deadline for entries is June 11 at midnight EST. Each time you guess on a new picture you get your name in my drawing hat again. Some of you have guessed on every picture and I appreciate you helping to make my mystery photo game fun.

MCPL_June2016-AnnHGabhartAs always, thanks for reading. Oh, and if you e-read, you can grab Murder at the Courthouse for $1.99 to $2.99 according to where you shop for e-books. Plus, if you live in the area and would like to hear me talk about my books, you can come to the Mercer County Public Library at 12 noon on Tuesday, June 7th. Event is free and open to the public. Would love to have you there.

I like a girl who doesn’t give up. Who keeps thinking. Who plans to figure out what this mystery photo is. Fun, Sandy.

Could be, Sandi. I am pretty sneaky with these mystery photos. So could be. Could not be too. Always fun to have you play my mystery photo game.

It does sparkle, doesn’t it, Elaine? Christmas tree decorations often sparkle. So great guess. Come back Wednesday night or Thursday to see if you’re right. Nice to have you play my mystery photo game.

You may be stumped, but that’s a great guess, Karen. Not saying it’s right. Not saying it’s wrong, but it’s a super guess. Thanks for playing my mystery photo game. One more mystery photo this game coming up on Wednesday along with the rest of this picture. Could be a chandelier.

      1. I am having so much fun reading all the guesses and your responses…it really brings home how varied our perception is…think I’ll stick with my original answer though…not sure why?

Glad you’re enjoying seeing the mystery through other eyes, Mary. That can be fun. Especially for me.

Good you’re spotting so many things, Sandy. That shows you’re using your imagination. And you never can tell. One of those might be right and you could be wearing an “I got it right” tiara when I reveal the rest of the picture on Wednesday night. So fun that you are playing my mystery photo game.

  1. I think this photo looks like a thimble. It looks a lot like the antique silver thimble I have in my collection from my great-aunt. I never did get the hang of sewing with one, but I sure do love collecting them from places I visit. You come up with some great mystery photos!

Nice guess, Amy. Not saying it’s right, but I like the way you tell about it. My aunt tried to teach me to use one when I was first learning to sew. I couldn’t do it either. But I did learn to use one way back when I patched blue jeans. Now holes are in fashion. LOL.

One of those thingys, right, Jennifer? It’s definitely a thingy, but you’ll have to wait until Wednesday night to see if it’s the thingy you’re describing or some other thingy. Fun to have you come play my mystery photo game.

You’re covering your bases with two guesses, Brenda. That’s fun and one of them could be right, and for sure one of them could be wrong. Thanks for playing my mystery photo game.

  2. Another stumper for me…..but, I’ll make a wild guess:
I think the top looks like a fancy upholstery tack head……..the bottom could be fabric fibers.

Flags must have been a common name for irises…..I heard that name here in Delaware….a long way from Kentucky.
Wonder if the seed/plant catalogs called them that?

That’s a nice guess, Marji. I know just what you mean, but does that mean it’s because that is what is in the picture? Time will tell. I didn’t know if flag for iris was just a local Kentucky saying or not. Good to hear that you knew about flags (iris) up in Delaware too. I don’t know about those seed catalogs, but I could google iris/flags and see if the wise google machine knows both names.

A swag around a Christmas tree. Great guess, Loretta. You’ll have to wait until Wednesday to see if it was a great RIGHT guess. 🙂 Thanks for playing my mystery photo game.

  3. Reminds me of a vase, too. (I really should stop reading other responses … sigh) And here is a little story to go along with my guess … When I was a kid, we had church camp during the summers in Bagdad, KY. At first, it was GAs(Girls in Action), then we progressed into Acteens.

Both of these camps cost money and, since we didn’t have a whole lot, I often trudged up the hill to my grandparent’s house. I dusted furniture, polished silver, washed windows and mucked stalls to earn my $40 for camp. It was work for a kid, to be certain, but it was also a chance to put my hands on the fancy things and to hear the stories my Grandmother would tell about the people and places and things attached to these items I cleaned. I can remember feeling very wise and rich and humble and blessed.

All of those pretties went to auction after my grandfather’s death and the family farm has been sold. Your picture, whether it is the correct guess or not, has brought to mind all those times of work that enabled me to play, and the memories that have made me rich indeed. Thank you, sweet Ann. Have fun at the library tomorrow!

Sounds as if you got a double bonus from those days hiring out to your grandmother. The money for camp and stories for a lifetime. I like it when my mystery pictures stir up memories. For me and for everyone else too. Thanks for sharing yours, Kristy. Always a pleasure to read your words. And thanks for the good wishes for my library visit. I just hope somebody shows up! Besides me, that it. I plan to show up. 🙂

Do you ever wear brooches these days, Ola? I remember them being very popular when I was a kid. And I had a few of them myself. I have some antique ones now passed down to me, but I just enjoy having them and don’t wear them. Thanks for the guess on my mystery photo.

  4. My comment is not a really good one as I am stumped on this one and no matter where i go or how i look at it i still can;t get it so i am guessing what first came to mind it is the underside of a small vase .

Sometimes those first thoughts are best, Peggy. Sometimes not. Either way, right or wrong, you still get another entry in the drawing. Hope you had fun trying to figure the mystery out.

Hi, Mary. Thanks so much for stopping by to play my probably not so amazing mystery photo game. It can be fun whether it’s actually amazing or not. 🙂 And nice guess. Not saying it’s right or wrong. You have to wait until Wednesday to see “the rest of the picture.” I’m sort of borrowing that thought from Paul Harvey’s “the rest of the story.” I always enjoyed hearing his pieces on the radio.

Nice guess, Linda. Could be right. Could be wrong. I remember when many of the church ladies would have a brooch pinned on their dresses, often right in the front or to hold a scarf. I have a few that belonged to my grandmother and aunt. My mom loved pins too, but they were generally smaller ones she could put on her collar.

  6. How about an upside down glass vase! My aunt and uncle call irises flags, too. I think my grandmother did, too and she had the most beautiful assortment of flags but when a tornado came through they were destroyed. My uncle lives there now and occasionally a iris/flag sprouts somewhere. They are hardy. Can’t wait to find out what this mystery picture is. Your posts are something I look forward to…have a super week! Linda

Hard to think about a tornado ruining iris, Linda. It must have ripped them out of the ground. And yes, they are hardy. I guess that’s why so many yards have them. Nice guess. Glad you’re having fun with the “amazing” mystery photo game.
