Music comes from an icicle as it melts, to live again as spring water. ~Henry Williamson
Spring officially arrives in five days. Usually here in Kentucky we are enjoying spring like weather a week or two before the calendar declares it so. But this year we had those one or two weeks in February. Very unseasonable warmth with May and June temperature. It felt good but you knew it couldn’t last. The trees were tricked into budding out. The bushes began to bloom. Flowers hopped up out of ground thinking they were late to the party with how warm their roots were feeling. Then March blew in like a lion bringing February temperatures back. The blooms on the bushes suddenly looked as if they wished they could shrink back into buds.
Kentucky folks like to say if you don’t like the weather here just stick around. It will change. And we can have a little of winter and spring mixed on a March day here. But lately March is stuck on winter. A friend wrote on my Facebook page that she thought Mother Nature must have a crush on Old Man Winter and that’s why she was letting him hang around. I told her that if that was so, they must have been having a fight in February where she was telling Winter to get lost.
Winter didn’t get lost for long. He roared back to drop a half a foot of snow on us Monday morning. March 12th. Heavy snow that coated the trees and was without a doubt beautiful. Especially after the sun came up in a just washed very blue sky. Frankie and I went out hunting pictures before breakfast and then went back out again after the sun came up. Frankie, loves the snow. He loves to run in it and bite it and eat a little now and again. He never gets cold.
The little wildflowers, on the other hands, looked very cold in the snow. Hope some of them managed to hold up under the snow to bloom later on.
March snows aren’t so bad. They soak the ground with moisture. But the best thing about March snows is that when the March sun comes out the snow hastily melts away. That’s what Monday’s snow did. But there were still a few spots in the shade. My mother used to say that mean it was hanging around waiting for more. Generally that doesn’t happen in March but this year has been different. We’ve set warm temperature records in February. Why not try for snow records in March? So this morning when Frankie and I go out at sunrise, once more the ground is white. Snow has come during the night yet again. So here we go. Another walk in the snow.
So what about you? Are you having snow in March or are you in the warmer climes soaking up the sun?

Supposedly in the warmer climate; however, our March here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, is bringing us some unusually cold temps in the low 40’s. Then not out of the 60’s for our highs. The weather forecasters called it cool but to me it’s downright cold when I have to turn the heat on! but cloudy. Shouldn’t be too bad.

It’s been a chilly March for many of us, Karen. My daughter lives in SC and they have been cooler than normal too. But spring comes on the calendar on Tuesday. It has to start getting warmer then. At least I think it does although I’ve been told snow is in the forecast this week. Sigh. Today was nice. And I found some blooming flowers. Spring will come.
We had about 2 inches of snow on Monday morning and only a dusting this morning. I enjoyed my snow day on Monday, I work a the local elementary school. My daughter and I was out playing in the snow by 8 am. I am ready for Spring now though!

Schools were out in my town too, April. I do think March snows are the best to play in because it’s usually not dreadfully cold and most of the time the snow is great for snowman or fort building. This snow was so pretty because of the way it clung to all the tree branches. That did make walking under the trees interesting since even with the sun shining bright, you might get snow falling down on your head. But it was a fun time to walk and enjoy nature.
