“Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together … all things connect.” —Chief Seattle
I’ve said before on here that writing a novel can be thought of as making a web, something where each strand of web connects other strands to build the story. In many ways we can think of our very real lives and environment in much the same way – all parts connecting to build our worlds.
So it’s good to pause and consider our natural world on Earth Day and what we can do to protect our environment to ensure a good earth for our children and their children and on and on. Earth Day was founded in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson. At first the April 22nd Earth Day was focused on the United States, but Earth Day went international in 1990 with organized events around the world.
While the organizers and supporters of Earth Day may have in mind more of an activation mode to highlight ways to protect our environment, it’s also a great day to get out and enjoy the beauty of our world, especially on a sunshiny weekend like the one we just had. And so we did go on a hike down the creek, looking for wildflowers, enjoying the sound of the creek running along over rocks, and checking out the fossils in those rocks to think about the plants and creatures that lived long ago and left their imprint here for us to see. It was a day to simply be glad to be outdoors appreciating our world.
We did find some wildflowers too. Thanks for letting me share some Earth Day pictures with you. I hope we will always appreciate the beauty of our earth and do what we can to ensure future generations can take some hikes on a day in spring to celebrate the beauty of the earth.
“One of the first conditions of happiness is that the link between man and nature shall not be broken.” —Leo Tolstoy
Does seeing the beauty of our world make you happy?

God is good to us and the beauty of his world always gives are spirits a lift. The redwing blackbird at my birdfeeder. A red cardinal flying in for a seed. The leaves unfurling on the tree outside my window. The rain watering the earth. The grass seemingly growing inches overnight. The flowering crab apple tree a white cloud of blooms. And that’s just was I see out my window right now.
