“Sometimes the closer you are to the truth, the harder it is to see.” ― Jacqueline Simon Gunn, Circle of Trust
Lots of guesses on my first mystery photo that I posted on Sunday. Love that you didn’t all get it right. Was a bit worried when the second person and then the fifth knew what it was. I’m groaning that I’m not going to trick very many of you, but then some of you got it wrong and I started smiling again. That’s not nice, is it? But even so, I’m still smiling.
Okay, so you want to see the rest of the picture, don’t you? Here’s mystery photo 1 again for your information and here’s the rest of the picture. Sandi, Roma, Marji, Joy, Lavon, and Laurel got it right. It is a dandelion fluff. It’s not exactly the way Joy said. That it was a dandelion fluff after someone had made a wish on it. Instead it was a dandelion fluff I spotted early one morning while walking Frankie. The early morning dew had changed the look of the fluff. I just thought it looked kind of unique that morning. It was only later I saw the potential mystery photo.
Several of you guessed porcupine quills, but Linda wanted to know how I got so close. I would wonder that too had it really been porcupine quills. I’m not sure I’ve ever met a porcupine in the wild. Trying to think, but not sure I’ve even seen one in a zoo. Only pictures. No porcupines on my Kentucky farm for sure. A few of you thought it might be cat’s whiskers. Now those I might get close enough to take a picture. Dried flowers and feathers were other popular guesses. I thought some of you might guess feathers. Marilyn took those feathers a step farther and suggested the type of feathers used for quills to write. Can you imagine writing a whole book on paper with one of those quills? Give me a pencil. Or even better a keyboard. 🙂 Of course, Marilyn second guessed her quill answer by saying some sort of weird fish fins.
I love Lois’s imaginative guess of cattails bursting out in the lowland. I want to go see them. And of course, one of you had to imagine Frankie in the picture by saying it might be his wet hair. Connie, he certainly has plenty of that wet hair when it’s raining. And I like a guesser who is sure of what she sees in a mystery photo. That was Loretta with her “a sunflower, of course.”
I always smile when one of you just throws in the towel and says “I don’t know” or “I haven’t a clue.” This time that was Darlene, Una and Robin. If I was on the other side of the picture doing the guessing, I’d be right there with you three. But I do appreciate those of you who did come up with some fun and imaginative guesses. So now, on to mystery picture 2. It’s up top. Do you know what it is? I’m bracing for you all to know this one. 🙂
Remember that even if you guessed on the dandelion mystery picture, you can still guess on this new mystery picture and get another entry into my drawing for your choice of one of my books along with a grab bag book. You do have to be at least 18 years old to enter and deadline for entries is Sunday May 5, 2019 at noon EST.
As always, thanks for reading. You make blogging fun.
So what is mystery photo 2???

Looks like typewriter keys. I kind of miss the days of typing papers on our old typewriter. I remember what an innovation the electric typewriter was. We used up a complete ribbon taking turns testing it out. My mom quickly invested in a reusable fabric ribbon and saved the nice one for final drafts.
I was thinking typewriter keys or old cash register keys.
My first thought was typewriter keys, but I know that’s not it I know it’s something I’ve encountered in the past. It’s stuck in my mind, but i can’t pull it out. LOL
My first thought is also old manual typewriter keys. Was trying to think of something else in case the earlier guesses are wrong, but nothing is coming to me.

Old quack digger tines

You sent me on a chase, Lois. First, I’ll just admit right off that you aren’t right, because I’ve never heard of a quack digger. But I had to find out what you were talking about. It’s a field cultivator for those of you who might be as clueless as I am. From the picture I found it’s something like what we call a disc harrow. But here’s the description of quack digger I found.
“A quack digger is a field cultivator. Typically a trailer type tool, as most were in use before 3 pt hitches were common. They featured quite high clearance, pointed, springy tines, with shearpins. Their name “quack digger,” came from their use in freshly broken fields, where a nasty grass with lots of tendrils, called “quack grass” grew. The cultivator would pull the roots to the surface, where exposure to the sun dried the roots, killing the plants. Often this tool was used several times over a two or three week period to kill off the grass roots. Quack grass is common to Michigan and perhaps other states in the midwest.”
So thanks, Lois, for helping me learn something new today. Love the name quack digger. Never heard of “quack grass” either. Maybe another internet exploration is on tap. 🙂
First for me, too!!! LOL 😁😆😄
Conveyer Belt rollers…
Antique rotary cam
Old fashioned machine cams.
Old adding machine
I love the mystery photos. Second photo…old typewriter keys
Several different items come to mind about this picture – my first thought is the keys on an old manual typewriter. Many a mystery has been rolled out on one. Oh the imagination is endless! Or it could also be an old adding machine or an old cash register. Hope I’m wright!! 🙂

Fun answer, Maria. I’m not saying you’re right, but it is looking bad for the mystery picture taker. Oh well. For sure many a mystery has been rolled out on those old typewriters. That line is making me remember some of the writers who probably thought they had the best new tool ever when they got one of those typewriters!! Maybe I should do a blog post about writing tools through the ages.
I thought keys of an old typewriter too. 😉
Cash register keys

I would say thanks for all the great answers, but there seems to be continual familiar guesses. Hmm. I’m hoping you’re all wrong!!! But we shall see. Linda McF is very confident. Could be her confidence is unfounded. Could be. Sigh.
But right or wrong, I’ll be posting the rest of the picture Sunday with a new mystery photo. And right or wrong, you all got an entry in the drawing for a couple of books. 🙂
Yes, I also think typewriter keys!
Yes, I also think typewriter keys!
Sorry Ann but I think it is typewriter keys too.
I think it is a picture of the keys on an old typewriter…which I learned to type on one of those old ones over 50 years ago. :o)
