The Wonder of Mystery

Mystery creates wonder and wonder is the basis of man’s desire to understand. Neil Armstrong

I love mysteries. I give mysteries some credit for me starting to dream of becoming a writer when I was a kid of nine or ten. That’s because some of the stories I loved then were Hardy Boy mysteries and I had the great idea of solving a mystery myself just the way those Hardy boys did in their stories.

However, I was a smart enough kid to know that mysteries didn’t drop down out of the sky and let wet behind the ears kids solve them. But I also knew that if somebody made up the story, anything could happen. That’s when the writing bug bit and I started writing a mystery starring me as the extra smart, extra cute and not shy at all super sleuth. That part took plenty of imagination for sure.

And so I started down this writing path way more years than I like to count up. But to give you an idea it’s been forty years since I got that first letter from my agent in 1978 to say that a historical novel I wrote about pioneers coming into Kentucky was going to be published. Many more books have followed that one. And now my 35th book, The Refuge has rolled out of the publishing company and is making its way out to readers. Reviews and comments are showing up. So far readers have had favorable things to say. But speaking of mysteries, (and we were, weren’t we? And yes, I know I dangled that participle, but a participle should be dangled on occasion) the response one’s story is going to get from readers is a mystery to most writers.

All right, I promise not to dangle any more participles. I wouldn’t want you to trip on them. But it’s time to talk mystery pictures instead of review mysteries. After the last mystery picture – the typewriter keys – was one that almost everybody got, this mystery picture stayed a mystery to all of you. Nobody got it exactly right although those of you, and there were several, who thought it might be Frankie’s tongue or a dog’s tongue were very, very close. But you see that cat. She’s hissing at you for thinking she was a dog. Loved all your imaginative guesses. And yes, once you guessed it, I had to admit that I too could see Spiderman when I looked at the mystery photo.

Some of you guessed fruit, an apple with a bite out of it, a dragonfruit, a red plum or a pomegranate. All a rosy red. Great guesses all and I had fun looking at the picture through your imaginative eyes. Some of the guesses had me smiling. Frankie thanks all of you who thought it might be his tongue, but he says his tongue might be too busy licking things for anybody to get a good picture.

Thanks to all of you who played the game. You got another entry into the drawing for a couple of books. We are down to our last mystery photo this game. I tried this mystery out on a couple of people. One got it. The other said it would be a good mystery. I’ve got a feeling it might be another typewriter key type picture. If it is, I’ll remind myself that’s it’s not whether you win or lose, but how you enjoy playing the game.

Do you like trying to figure out mysteries?

Thanks for reading. And guessing. try a new guess on this phot to have an entry in my giveaway for those books.

Found a few other guesses, I’d skipped over. But don’t worry. I’ve got your names in the drawing for the books.

Judy, your guess of toast made me think of how in movies sometimes characters tell somebody they’re toast. 🙂 Could be the mystery picture is toast.

Connie, you join the bacon crew. I think I should fry some up for breakfast.

April, sounds like dessert time with that ice cream and chocolate and strawberry. Yum.

Joy, you see a cheese slice and your son sees a turnover. You’re thinking healthy and he’s ready for dessert. Fun how you can look at the same picture and see so many different things. I’m still surprised only one guess was a fish. That’s what I saw. Maybe that’s what I took a picture of. Well, maybe not too.

Thanks for guessing. I’ll post the rest of the picture Sunday night and pick the three winners.

More fun guesses, everybody. You notice I say it’s fun when you aren’t all guessing the same thing and guessing right the way you did with those typewriter keys. Even those of you who guessed something else really thought it was typewriter keys. Oh well. This time I have you thinking food. And Sunday we’ll see if you’re right.

Una, I love strawberry cake and add a little ice cream, yum. But did I take a picture? Have I even had a strawberry cake? We’ll see.

Karen, you’re in there with the food, but appears I’ve already eaten the good part. Could be.

Beth, seems several of you are thinking strawberries. It is almost strawberry season. Love those strawberries straight out of the patch. Best thing ever.

Paula and Hope, you join a few others that are thinking ice cream. We shall see. And Hope, your husband joins a few others thinking bacon, including this round Linda.

Amy, you have my sweet tooth going talking about chocolate candy. So could be you’re stumped. Could be, you’re right. Could be.

Lucy, you have your guess in the cookie jar. Shortbread cookies would go well with the strawberry and ice cream guesses.

Lisa, honeycomb is an interesting guess, but sweet just the same as many of the other guesses. Always good to hedge your bets with a second guess too. Pineapple slice. I did make a pineapple upside down cake last week. So, who knows? You could be right.

Jan, I do love me some good cinnamon toast. Not sure about making it with rye bread though. Of course, I do work hard to trick you guys. LOL.

  3. I think it looks like ice cream drizzled with caramel and chocolate syrup, but my husband thinks it looks like bacon. It does look like foil in the background, so I am guessing it is something that was possibly baked. 🙂

You all have such wonderful imaginations. And could be some of you are imagining right. Could be. We shall see on Sunday.

Gail, I liked you rose petal with dew. I like to take pictures of just that sort of thing. So could be.

Margaret, Nancy & Lisa B – You all are thinking bacon. I do love bacon. But then Nancy saw eyes and is wondering if it some sort of creature. Maybe a bacon loving creature.

Darlene, Karen J. and Betty, you saw cake and joined a number of others sure it must be something yummy to eat. Sorry about making you hungry, Betty. Maybe you should go make a cake.

Ona, I’m guessing your mother’s monkey bread was yummy.

Emily, I have been thinking about making some banana bread. Maybe I did and took a picture of it.

Sue, you stepped away from the crowd of hungry people at least a little with your walnut guess, but then walnuts are pretty tasty.

Carol and Melanie, you see some ice cream there. My granddaughters would love that and maybe I did take a picture.

Lois, Michelle, Lavon & Linda, you all are seeing some good things that are making me hungry. I love cinnamon buns and French toast and danishes. Can’t go wrong with those, except you might go wrong with the guess. Or not. That remains to be seen.

Suzanne, you’re in there cooking with everybody but you aren’t named your baked yummy. But it sounded good the way you described it. Maybe I made something like that. Maybe.

Roma, I’m with you. I see a fish. That’s not to say it is a fish. Just that I can see a fish there. And I have been known to take pictures of various creatures. So, you never know. You could be right. Or not.

Marji, I did pat myself on the back for the mystery picture that had you all at least somewhat fooled. Apple strudel sounds delicious. The question is, have I ever made apple strudel to take a picture? But wait. I wouldn’t have to make it. Just see it somewhere, perhaps at a restaurant. Hmm…

Now I think we should all go eat something sweet and yummy.

  5. My oldest son thinks it is a turnover with chocolate glaze drizzled on it. My first thought was cheese slice.
