Happy Mother’s Day to all of you. I’m a day late but then lately I seem to be at least a day late on most everything. The weekend was busy with a visit to the garden center to buy some new plants. Now if it will just warm up enough to plant some of those blooms. We could have frost again tonight. The dogs and I walked earlier and I was wishing for a coat. I took off outside thinking it was May and a sweater would be fine. Not! But the dogs stayed plenty warm.
I missed posting last night, so I’m sharing the reason I can celebrate Mother’s Day on this day after Mother’s Day.ย That’s my beautiful kids who gave me the gift of being a mom. I’m so blessed with wonderful children who married wonderful spouses and have the most beautiful children in the world. A grandmother can think that. But I’m sharing my three children’s pictures. The ones with my sons were actually taken on a Mother’s Day weekend in the past. My youngest son usually comes and goes to church with me on Mother’s Day. Of course, that didn’t happen this year. And the picture of my daughter and I were in the spring one year when I was visiting her.
I came across this list of kitchen signs sometime this week and hope it will give you moms some smiles. Whether you are a mom or not, we can all be very thankful for our own moms. I had a super mother. I know many of you did too.
Signs in a Kitchen
1. So this isn’t Home Sweet Home … Adjust!
2. Martha Stewart doesn’t live here!!
3. Ring bell for maid service. If no answer, do it yourself!
4. I clean house every other day. Today is the other day.
5. If you write in the dust, please don’t date it!
6. I would cook dinner but I can’t find the can opener!
7. My house was clean last week, too bad you missed it!
8. I came, I saw, I decided to order take out.
9. If you don’t like my standards of cooking …lower your standards.
10. Although you’ll find our house a mess, Come in, sit down, converse.
11. It doesn’t always look like this: Some days it’s even worse.
12. A messy kitchen is a happy kitchen, and this kitchen is delirious.
13. A balanced diet is a cookie in each hand!
14. Thou shalt not weigh more than thy refrigerator.
15. Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves for they shall never cease to be amused.
16. Countless number of people have eaten in this kitchen and gone on to lead normal lives.
17. My next house will have no kitchen … just vending machines.
18. I’d live life in the fast lane, but I am married to a speed bump.
Number 10 and 15 are my favorites. I like the idea of not worrying about what the house looks like as much as worrying about the joy of having visits. Right now, most of us would like to enjoy that kind of joy again. We look forward to a return to visits and hugs and smiles we don’t have to hide with masks.
Which of these did you like?
As always, thanks for reading and I hope you had plenty of smiles on Mother’s Day.

A funny story about #18. We lived as missionaries in Mexico for several years. Speed bump in Spanish is’tope’…and many times when I would say something about my husband Toby they would think I was calling him ‘tope’. Also one time when he was approaching a ‘tope’ without seeing it I began saying ‘tope! tope! TOPE!’. He finally hit it and said: oh – I thought you were calling my name! ๐ It is true – that he has always been a speedbump in my crazy busy life – and a good one too! Gratefully God has slowed me down to his speed. We have laughed many times as I call him my ‘tope’ :). Thanks for your writings, Ann!

Love the story, Marilyn. Thanks so much for sharing it with us. I especially liked the part where you were warning him about the speed bump. Sounds as if he could have see what you were wanting by calling his name more than once. Might have been a tarantula on the dash or something. ๐ That saying is definitely one that suits you since you are grateful for the speed bump that has slowed you down to a complimentary speed with your ‘tope.’
My favorite is #13-A balanced diet is a cookie in each hand! Thatโs me for sure! I was unable to be with my mom on her birthday Saturday (she turned 93) or Motherโs Day. I missed her but so very thankful I could call her which I did several times!

I’m so sorry you couldn’t visit your mother on Mother’s Day, Linda. That had to be hard, but I’m sure she was glad to get those phone calls that made her feel loved. It does seem to be important to see those moms on Mother’s Day if you can.
Hope those cookies in your balanced diet are good ones. I favor homemade oatmeal with dried cranberries. I’d make some but then I’d be holding one in each hand until they were gone. ๐
No. 16 was my favorite. With this pandemic Iโve had to eat my own cooking. I will be glad when things open back up so someone else can suffer with me. Or better yet go out to a restaurant! I really enjoyed the Kitchen Signs!

That’s a good one, Donna. I do manage to let my grandchildren know that sometimes – that their parents grew up healthy and fine eating my food. ๐ A couple of my grandkids are picky eaters, but they nearly all like mac and cheese so that makes it easy.
I’m with you and a little tired of cooking. But cooking and eating are more fun when you have a lively bunch sitting at the table with you or helping you chop up that salad or whatever.
Being one of seven children I can relate to every one of those quotes. Our house was never dirty, but never quite “clean” by some standards. We lived in our house and made no apology for that. Mom had a small plaque on the dining room wall that was very similar to #10 & 11. It was true for our family. I wouldn’t trade those memories of growing up as we did for anything in the world. I especially like #4, 5, 7 & 12. Happy Mother’s day to you, Ann.

I like that one about writing the date in the dust too, Maria. I happen to hate dusting and so it’s a chore I put off and put off. What’s a little dust hurt as long as nobody puts that date in it? The other’s you liked are fun too.
With seven children it’s good you had a house to feel at home and a mother who knew what was most important in raising those children. Number 11 makes me smile. I once read that if you saw unexpected company coming, to pull out the vacuum like you were just getting ready to get going on cleaning. LOL.
Loved all the kitchen jokes. I have a favorite sign in my kitchen in Texas (not a joke) that I bought in Lawrenceburg, Ky. a few years ago that reads: Open 24 hours!. Nanaโs Kitchen….Where memories are made and grandkids are spoiled.โ This is a true statement!

Neat that you bought that sign in my hometown, Lynda. Nana’s kitchen is a place where fun happens. Great that you are making memories with your grandkids. As you say, no joke.
My favorite kitchen sayings are #3, 7, and 15. I’m glad you had a nice Mother’s Day despite the circumstances.

I like those too, Suzanne. I hope you had a nice day too.
Hi Ann,
This Mother’s Day waa bittersweet for me. It’s the first without my mom. I am blessed with four lovely kids, but my heart aches for my mother. Knowing she’s in a better, pain free paradise doesn’t always fill the emptiness she left behind.
I like your kitchen quotes. Mom made a sampler of #16 that hangs above her kitchen table. It made me smile to see it on your list. ๐
I’m hoping it warms up soon too. Today is downright cold! I’m eager to plant some flowers too. I’ve got a spot in my yard where my daughter and I are going to make a little memorial garden with red flowers (Mom’s favorite color) and a bird bath.
I’m sure summer will be here soon…pushing winter & spring aside before we know it.
Thanks for sharing the beautiful photos.

Those Mother’s Days after you have to tell your mom goodbye for a while are the hardest, Lavon. Maybe especially the first one. I know a woman who lost her only daughter in a tragic car wreck this year. She had a very sad Mother’s Day too. I’m sure you had many memories to think about today and every day about your mother. As did this other mom too. The memorial garden sounds like a wonderful way to honor and remember your mother.
And yes, it was plain cold today. But by next weekend they say we may hit 90 degrees. Kentucky weather has been stranger even than usual this year.
My condolences, Lavon. Motherโs Day will never be the same for me. I was 38 when our mother died. That was 41 years ago and I still miss her every day. Healthy and full of life until her last 10 days. She had just turned 70 three months before. Iโll be praying for you. ๐๐ป
Happy Belated Motherโs Day, Ann!!! The pictures with your children are wonderful and your comment so sweet! We have had beautiful weather here on the MS Coast! Cool in the mornings- in the 50โs and warming to the 70โs. ๐ Great walking weather! My sister and I also have two sons and a daughter giving us the privilege of being called Mom.
My favorite kitchen quotes?
Numbers 3, 9, 13 and 17. Actually I like them all except the last one. ๐
Stay safe, Stay well! ๐๐ป
Number One and Number Two were my favorites, Ann!
My Grandma B has the wording to saying Number One on a sign in her kitchen! ๐
It’s a great memory and bonding moment from my childhood with Grandma B( my Dad’s mom).๐
Happy Belated Mother’s Day,Ann!๐

The comment and the response do not go together. Karen sent you the comment but the reply is from Emily. Not sure if I have that correct but the two donโt go together. ๐?๐

I know, Karen. Sometimes when you’re reading through comments, you just don’t realize your writing your comment on another comment. It’s no problem. I understood they were separate comments. I’m glad you liked all the signs except the last one. I considered deleting that one. Maybe I should have, but some might think it was cute if not serious. Sounds as though the weather is fabulous in MS. Wonderful walking weather for us. And seems we have a pattern going with these two boys and a girl children. ๐
Thanks for being patient with me! This day has not been the greatest. But tomorrow is another day and joy comes in the morning. ๐๐ป And itโs true, they can be a bump in the road!

I’m glad the signs sent you down a sweet memory lane, Emily. Sounds as though your grandmother had a fun sense of humor. That chapter in Proverbs does tell how to be a virtuous woman.
