“What we could consider magic, may just be science that we don’t understand yet.” ― Patricia Robin Woodruff, Strange Tales of Floyd County, VA
Thank you all for playing my Mystery Photo Game. Some of you are really hard to trick into thinking something different than what it is. But I guess some people are simply better at solving mysteries than others. For those of you who have some problems figuring out these mystery photos, don’t feel bad. I was looking back through my file of mystery photos on my computer and guess what? I can’t match some of them up to the right picture. So I’d be right there with you on figuring out these mysteries.
For sure, many of you figured out the mystery picture was purple or deep blue and that led to many of you guessing those blue or purple things. Eggplants, blueberries, plums, black grapes, raspberries and yes, blackberries. Other of you had some interesting guesses. Loretta said catfish and Betsy said a game piece while Ola saw the moon and Lucy an iron fence. But my favorite was Marji’s guess of Marley’s curls I trimmed off last week. Loved that guess, Marji, even though it wasn’t right. Judi, Linda Mc., Una, Janice and Margie got it right. Jacinda was almost right with her raspberry guess. It was a very close up picture of a blackberry, one I picked last week and snapped its picture before I popped it into my mouth.
It is blackberry picking time. Since my son and his girls enjoy blackberry jam, they are always ready to go picking over in the field. Picking blackberries with grandkids makes it a lot more fun than fighting those briers for the berries by myself. I took this picture of my youngest granddaughter with her full bucket of berries three years ago. That’s the thing with wild berries. You can’t depend on having a great crop every year. One year there wasn’t much rain and so the berries were little and hardly worth picking. Another year the deer and the birds seemed to beat us to the berries. One year it rained so much the bees must not have done their job of pollinating the berries and so again the berries were scarce. And of course, sometimes that late freeze or frost will spoil the berry year. But this year looks to be a good berry year although a nice shower on them would help things. Rains have gone around us but not fallen on the berry patch or the garden patch either. Thunder keeps rumbling to get Frankie worried but the rain slides off in a different direction.
Piper in An Appalachian Summer has to deal with a few thunderstorms. And I even let her pick a few wild raspberries up around one of the mountain clinics.
I’ve gone blackberry picking almost every year of my life when there were berries. For a few years we had boysenberry bushes in our yard and they produced so many berries, that I didn’t go hunt berries in the field but fought the boysenberry thorns for those delicious berries. We didn’t keep them trimmed up and my husband got tired of mowing around them so he bushhogged them away. We still have some volunteer bushes in the garden but for some reason they never produce as well as those we had in the yard. We do have some thornless blackberry bushes in the garden now. Hardly a hassle at all to pick those if I can beat the birds to them. But it’s not as much fun as picking berries with the girls and then enjoying a sweet blackberry cobbler or pie.
New Mystery Picture Up
Okay, I’m ready for a new round of guesses. Remember, a guess on a new photo gets you a new entry in the drawing. You must be at least 18 years old to enter the giveaway. Two winners will get their choice of one of my books plus a grab bag book. We’ll play the game with the last mystery picture on Wednesday, July 15th and deadline for entries will be July 18, 2020 at midnight EST.
Have you ever gone berry picking? And what is that picture up top?

This one has me stumped.
I have been blackberry picking. We used to can them. They are good for sick tummies.

This one had everybody stumped, Paula. It was my success picture for this mystery photo game. All the the others have at least two or more right guesses, but nobody knew that pecan.
I love blackberries. And I have picked many. Blackberry jam is so good especially on a homemade biscuit or even making a blackberry shortcake. I’m thinking that your mystery photo may be mud where heavy rains made their path through the clay and rocks. Rather a quiet Sunday today.
I’m enjoying it. I hope you are, too.

I went with my son and his kids to pick berries last Friday and we got about a gallon even though they were just beginning to get ripe. I love blackberry jam and pies. Never made a blackberry shortcake, Eileen. Sounds interesting.
I like your guess of mud with tracks through it. Shows you’re really using your imagination. You’re not right, but then nobody was. So in a few minutes I’m posting the answer with the rest of the picture.
Hi Ann!
Loved, loved, loved An Appalachian Summer ❤️.
Could this picture be a s’more?
Author
So glad you enjoyed my new mountain story, Nyla. That makes me smile. And the picture could be a s’more, but it isn’t. I’m getting ready to post the rest of the picture. Nobody got it. I thought they would, but nobody did.
I picked my black raspberries today and a few red raspberries. I made a puffed pancake with them.
I’ll guess bark on a tree.
Author
Raspberry pancakes, Lucy. That sounds delicious. I often make blueberry pancakes for my son-in-law when he comes to visit.
The mystery picture could have been tree bark, but it isn’t. I’m getting ready to do the mystery reveal in a new post.
Not sure on this one. Maybe parts of a sunflower.

At least you didn’t guess bacon, Janice. That’s been the popular guess this time. And it’s wrong the same as sunflower is wrong. Check back a little later after I have time to do the picture reveal. But wrong guesses gets you entered in the drawing the same as right guesses. Good thing because otherwise nobody would have gotten an entry on this post. Everybody was wrong. I’m feeling cocky so I’m sure everybody will get the one I post next. Only this one and one more and then the fun will be over for a while.

Okay, bacon seems to be winning the day. There are either going to be a lot of you right or a lot of you wrong. Evelyn put her bacon on a bacon and tomato sandwich. I do love a good BLT and I don’t even care if I have the L as long as I have the T.
Joanne, fun that you let your husband guess. But your guess of chocolate with caramel does sound good.
Lavon, you went for the popular guess and then decided on an apple stack cake. That sounds like a great dessert and I do like apple pies.
Rebekah, you added to your bacon guess too with a chocolate bar. I have grandkids that like those chocolate bars so I might have taken a picture of one of them. Maybe.
Linda, you’re joining in with the bacon guesses that are going to put you on the right side or all of you wrong side. I too love those blackberry cobblers. My son is coming out later and we’re going to see if we can find some blackberries over in the hayfield to make one.
Laura, pretzel sticks sound like a good guess, and Michelle, you take it a step farther and let somebody bit into that pretzel. For sure wherether any of you are right or wrong, most of you are staying in the kitchen and looking for answers in the food cupboard.
Una and Connie Lee, you both broadened your guesses. Connie, you guessed three things and Una, you just see layers. Not sure layers of what. I have a feeling everybody is going to be surprised on Sunday.
Marjorie, you start out away from food with wood bark although my dogs sometimes chew on wood and go to fries. I did post something once that looked like fries when it was a grass top. So maybe this time I took a picture of real fries. Maybe.
Patty, you have that chocolate frosting for the cake Lauren says needs frosting. 🙂
Jacinda, ahh, another guess out of the food line. That’s not to say the guesses shouldn’t be in the food line. But it’s fun to have a different guess.
I am stumped on this one. My best guess is wood shingles.
Looks like it’s something with layers
Author
Love all the guesses. For sure all of them are making me hungry.
Betty and Betsy and Nancy – you’re all thinking bacon, but Betty and Nancy, you sound a bit surer than Betsy. I did bacon once in a previous game, but could be I did it again. Remember, I did say I couldn’t remember what some of those previous mystery photos were. But I do know what this one is.
Karen – I like what you said about how it’s fun to see what the brain thinks the eye sees. Sometimes we do see things a little differently when we’re not sure what we’re looking at. But you aren’t the only one to see pancakes. Wonder if you and the others too are right?
Lauren – Hope’s daughter thought it looked like a layer cake too. And you’re right if it’s a cake, it does need icing. But did I make a cake especially for this mystery photo game? You never know. I might have.
Emily – I can see that peanut butter sandwich with crust. I like the crust so my sandwich would definitely have crust. So could be. Maybe. Maybe not.
It’s been years since I’ve been blackberry picking and always loved blackberry cobbler.
My guess for the mystery picture is bacon!
Someone biting a pretzel
Yes, I’ve been blackberry picking. I just like to pick and eat a few at a time. I don’t have a very big patch to pick from. The picture looks to be some type or bread or cake, maybe a biscuit.
