Sharing a Sunday Sunrise

“Cherish the times you can watch the sunrise, there’s only so many in a lifetime.” ~Unknown

I post a little description of my Sunday morning walks with my dogs, Frankie and Marley each week on my Facebook page. They are the dark spots in the picture above. We never take a long morning walk. We go for the longer walk later in the day, but the early walk before breakfast while the day is waking up is a treat. I don’t walk then for exercise. I meander, taking time to look and listen.  This is especially true on Sundays when I know I’m going to share whatever I’ve seen and/or heard for my Facebook page buddies who “walk” with me in my Sunday Morning Coming Down Facebook posts. If you are one of my virtual walkers, thank you for coming along.

I walk with the dogs every morning, rain or shine. Sometimes I think about all the sights I would have missed if not for my insistent Frankie dog who sets off a get up alarm for me at the first sign of daylight. He starts whining. Those whines are easy to interpret. “Day’s a wasting. Sun will be coming up. Trails out there waiting to be sniffed.” I have to admit that sometimes when it’s raining or snowing or really cold, staying burrowed down under the covers in bed a little longer is tempting. Frankie doesn’t give a pass no matter the weather. It’s time to get out there and greet the morning. Without his “encouragement,” I would have probably missed many morning wonders.

“The sunrise, of course, doesn’t care if we watch it or not. It will keep on being beautiful, even if no one bothers to look at it.” ~ Gena Amole

This morning was no exception. If I hadn’t been outside, heading down into the pasture field at the exact right time, I would have missed the WOW part of the sunrise today. That’s the thing about sunrises. They explode across the sky in beauty one minute and change the next. Sometimes that change is simply to a new show of beauty and sometimes the sunrise simply fades away without leaving a trace of its glory. That didn’t happen while I was walking this morning. The beauty kept coming even as the purple swallowed up the rosy pink in the clouds to the southeast.

“Every day a million miracles begin at sunrise.” ~ Eric Jerome Dickey

But then as the colors were changing on one side of the sky, pink was flooding the other side of the sky.

“It’s almost impossible to watch a sunrise and not dream.” ~ Bernard Williams

And finally the gold took over in the east as the sun came closer. All of these changes happened in minutes without Frankie or Marley paying the least attention. 🙂 But thanks to Frankie’s whine alarm, I was outside where I did get to pay attention. A morning blessing that was worth a few shivers and cold fingers.

“O, Sunlight! The most precious gold to be found on Earth.” ~ Roman Payne

All sunrises are not as spectacular as the one this morning. Sometimes the sun just hops up over the horizon with no fanfare at all. Sometimes clouds hide the sun’s entrance on my side of the world. But sometimes, because of an insistent dog, I am out in the morning at the exactly right time.

Do you like seeing the sunrise each morning?

If you are one of those who “goes walking” with me on Sunday mornings, did I manage to share today’s sunrise in words to help you “see” it with me?

  1. I enjoy “walking” along with you on Sunday mornings, always look forward to it. And being the author you are, you can describe a sunrise to paint a picture of it in my mind. I see the sunrise through a window in my warm house. I enjoy noting the time it rises because it is getting a minute earlier everyday now, a little closer to spring each day.

So fun to have so many friends go walking with the dogs and me on Sunday mornings, Connie. I sometimes wonder if you’ll all get bored at “seeing” some of the same things week in and week out. But so far, you are all very kind and enjoy the sights.

For sure, it’s warmer watching the sunrise through the window.

  2. Anne, thanks the beautiful reminder to open my eyes to all the beauties around me! I love your photos, your inspiring thoughts, and how your words inspire thankfulness for all God’s gifts. We walk with a dog daily, too, but never at sunrise; however, I may just give it a try soon. (He’s up at the crack of dawn too, so maybe I should be as well).

Dogs can get you out of the house walking, Amy. Before Frankie, I only walked in the afternoon with my last dog, Oscar. But he wasn’t the ball of energy Frankie is. Before we fenced in our backyard, I had to keep Frankie on leash any time he was out of the house. That was crazy but he was headstrong and would take off for anywhere then. So he couldn’t be loose until we were walking in the back field of the farm. But to try to keep him a little less crazy, we walked a lot then. 🙂 And now he thinks we have to keep walking every morning. Dogs do love to stick with a routine. They don’t need clocks to know when it’s time to get up, go walking, get fed or whatever.

I appreciate your kind words and so glad you stop by to read them. We are blessed with beauty when we look around at God’s world.
