Those of you who stop by here at my blog place know that I’m a dog person. You could put “dog” up in the search area and no telling how many posts would pop up. Some would pop up for cats too, but not nearly as many. The cat ones would probably be about my cozy mystery stories that had cat characters because cozy mysteries have to have a cat or dog or some animal along for the story. My first Hidden Springs mystery, Murder at the Courthouse, had a cat named Two Bits. He was a barbershop cat. Somehow I connect Two Bits with a barber. My second Hidden Springs book, Murder Comes by Mail, featured Aunt Lindy’s cat, Grimalkin. Grimalkin was in all three mysteries, but had more of a starring role in the second one. Last book, Murder Is No Accident, featured a stray calico cat named Miss Marble. So, I probably had some posts mentioning them when my mysteries were published and I even shared some cat stories from readers.

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea. – Robert Heinlein

It’s not that I don’t like cats. I do. But when we first moved to the house where we live now some 40 plus years ago, we didn’t have any outbuildings close to the house. My husband is not a cat lover and would not like a cat in the house. We’d always had barn cats. So we had our dogs. Most of those were farm dogs that lived outside until my husband gave me a cockerspaniel. Then he was an inside dog. Fast forward a few years and Oscar got run over and had to have an expensive surgery on his leg. I had to coax him inside. He never wanted to come in, but once he got used to the idea, he liked it. I’ve written several posts about that sweet dog. And now I have Frankie and Marley and they are definitely inside dogs although Frankie loves being outside as long as it isn’t thundering or too frigid. I’ve also written about my children’s and grandchildren’s dogs. Last but not least, I’ve written about the dogs that star in my books from Asher in The Innocent to Sarge in These Healing Hills. I have a dog name Maisy in my upcoming release, When the Meadow Blooms. I love writing animal charaters. They are always such fun.

If a dog jumps in your lap, it is because he is fond of you. If a cat does the same thing, it is because your lap is warmer. – Alfred North Whitehead

So I’m going to let you exercise your imaginations in my Caption Game with a dog and cat picture.

I loved all the fun captions you suggested for the first picture. They were all great. Donna and Joan had me singing along with their suggetions, “Take Me Home Country Roads” and “On the Road Again.” I had to smile and remember the movie when Janice suggested “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.” Vicki’s “Where to, Ethel?” made me smile. Some of you had them going for ice cream or to the movies. Some of you had them heading to grandma’s house or on various adventures. Lucy had them taking a joy ride before Nana caught them. Don’t give them any ideas, Lucy. LOL. Amy had them going somewhere warm and sunny and that would have been good this weekend. We had sunny but we sure didn’t have warm. And of course, Marji and Ruby knew kids and that they would be saying it was their turn to drive.

You all had some great ideas and gave your imaginations a workout. Now it’s time to do it again with the picture up top. Remember each time you suggest a caption for a new picture, you get another entry in the drawing to have a chance to win your choice of one of my books. You do have to be at least eighteen years old to enter, but you can let your kids help decide on the best caption. Deadline to enter is March 26, 2022 at midnight EST. I’ll pick three winners.

Now how about some more cat and dog quotes to maybe make you smile.

Cats are smarter than dogs. You can’t get eight cats to pull a sled through snow. – Jeff Valdez

Dogs will come when called. Cats will take a message and get back to you. – Missy Dizick

I had been told that the training procedure with cats was difficult. It’s not. Mine had me trained in two days. ~Unknown

Dogs are not like cats, who amusingly tolerate humans only until someone comes up with a tin opener that can be operated with a paw. – Terry Pratchett

Your turn now. I’m waiting to see what great captions you can come up with for Sumo, the dog, and Finn, the cat?

The great captions keep coming. Some of you act like you’ve had a Sumo and Finn of your own.

Carol, your caption hit close to home. These are my daughter’s pets and they live in an old house that they’ve always wondered whether it might have a haunts. I’m thinking Sumo might have been able to convince them that the ghost did it. LOL.

Donna Jean, I’m not sure which one could beat which one, but as I already said, Sumo could move surprisingly fast when he heard the kibble being dished up or something dropped on the floor.

Linda M., I think you hit on the right caption. Sumo does look as if Finn might be sticking a cat claw in him somewhere.

Linda Diane, Sumo wasn’t very happy to share. My daughter says she thinks Sumo had his uh-oh look that he was afraid he was going to get in trouble if he did what he really wanted to do and voiced a few woofs at that pesky cat.

Amy G., I think you’re right about Finn rooting Sumo off his bed and that indeed, sharing wasn’t in his plan.

Cindy Sue, you must have a cat or dog if you know how they listen for those perfect sounds that mean food. And Sumo, in spite of his crippled legs, could move pretty fast when food was in the offing.

Amy B., I don’t think Finn is too worried. It’s poor Sumo that looking stressed. 🙂 But then isn’t it just like a cat to keep his cool.

Connie, your caption made me smile. Sumo was actually pretty good about that wait until you leave. Not with bothering the cat, but he did make his escape through baby gates and barriers to get where he wanted to go.

Ola, I like your caption. Actually Sumo did like cats. Not sure that Finn likes dogs.

You all are outdoing yourself coming up with Sumo and Finn quotes. Love them.

Paula, yours made me smile. Those cats sometimes do sit on faces and Sumo had his way of getting attention too.

Una, Sumo does sort of look like he’s wishing for that bed of his own. But I think he really liked the company.

Lee, that’s funny. For sure, both Finn and Sumo had plenty of pictures snapped of them. And Tom is a great name for a cat. I started not to give their names, but then decided to.

Emily, cats are always innocent even after being proved guilty. At least in their minds. Sumo, on the other hand, was a determined little guy who had a way of doing whatever he wanted to do even though he was crippled by dog arthritis.

Marji, your caption made me smile. Sumo does look a little unhappy about something. Glad you enjoyed the cat and dog quotes.

  4. Cat: I think I heard the can opener( or treat bag) !! You go check !

Dog: First come; first served! He who hesitates is hungry!

  5. Sumo: ” It wasn’t my fault,Mom. Finn did it!” Finn: “Who,me? I’m innocent until proven guilty!”

  6. Sumo: “Excuse me, this cat took my bed and won’t leave”

Finn: “I wonder why MY humans had to get a dog? Oh well, maybe I can blame the plant I ate on him.”

We have 3 spoiled cats and sometimes we don’t know which one “committed the crime” but our youngest cat sometimes gives himself away because he goes and sits in the corner when he has done something he shouldn’t of. Sometimes we find him in the corner and can’t figure out what he did. He also has to have his teddy bear to sleep with at night. We gave it to him as a kitten after his mamma abandoned him. I had to dropper feed him and gave him the tiny stuffed bear to sleep with and now he is almost 7 years old and still loves it. He sleeps in a large pet taxi on a foam pillow in our room at night, which keeps him out of trouble, but we get no sleep if he doesn’t have his teddy bear. He carries it in his mouth and walks around inside the pet taxi in circles every night, like he is taking it for a walk before he goes to sleep. My son jokes that he is really a dog in a cat costume, since we can’t have a dog where we live. 🙂

I think you’ve pegged Sumo here, Hope. He doesn’t look at all pleased about sharing his bed. And Finn would certainly blame things on him if he could. Actually, Sumo liked cats. He was a great little dog.

That’s so funny that your cat acts as if he knows he’s in trouble. Most cats don’t much care or at least that’s their reputaion. I think your son is on the right track with that idea of him bein a dog in a cat costume. Sounds like some things a dog might do. I used to say my dog Oscar was a person in a dog’s body. But Frankie is definitely all dog.

  7. I’ve always preferred dogs, but I know that it’ due to my daddy’s strong dislike of cats. Once I married and moved to the farm, we had cats at the barn and our daughter became a true cat lover. Our 8 year-old-granddaughter loves cats as much as her mom, and her “Gray” has managed to charm me and convince me that he’s ok. Just shows that we never know how we’ll change over the years!

Sumo : “If I ignore that darn cat, may it will go away!”
Finn: “If I keep staring, maybe I can scare him away!”

I always preferred dogs too even though I loved our farm cats too. Now, my sister much prefers cats and always has. My mother never really liked cats. She had a thing about hair, but then she warmed up to this cat named Maggie and let it be in the house. We were all surprised. As you say, you never know how we’ll change.

Sumo does look a little scared in this picture and Finn is quite the cat character.
