What Is Riggs Saying?

Dogs do speak, but only to those who know how to listen.– Orhan Pamuk

And so we come to our last photo in our caption game. This one seemed to go fast. Maybe because I was really busy last week. Sometimes I think I’m too busy, but then I love what I’m doing. Well, most of the time. Walking the dogs – yes. Mopping floors – no. Cooking – sometimes. Cleaning – rarely. Writing – nearly always. Reading – yes, for sure. A person could go on and on with the yes and no answers and especially the sometimes ones.

But I have enjoyed this photo caption game with all of you. You’ve been so great with your suggestions for captions for the photos I’ve posted. Some of your answers have made me smile. Some have made me nod my head that yes, that’s perfect. And some have made me laugh. For my last picture of me sitting high on a rock somewhere at a Rock City park in New York state, you all suggested so many great captions. I tried to remember exactly where we were. Even searched online and looked at our old road atlas, but never came up with a sure location other than New York. We were coming back from a trip to Niagara Falls, heading south toward home.

When I read bn100’s suggested caption, I was puzzled for a minute and then I laughed. What fun to say I was on a solo cheerleading retreat. Several others of you thought of the cheerleading too. That Kentucky sweatshirt I had on, I guess, and the fact that I was sitting cross-legged like cheerleaders sometimes do. I have a couple of granddaughters who are cheerleaders. They do flips – the no hands ones –  and pyramids and all sorts of tricks. Sitting cross-legged is the only cheerleading move I could ever make. No flipping for me. I could never even do a cartwheel.

Many of you mentioned me being on top of the world. A couple of you were singing that Carpenter song about sitting on top of the world. I loved Dana’s Mountain Mama. A lot of you figured I had an exhausting climb up to the high view. Several mentioned that amazing view and the Lord’s wonderful creation. Karen thought I might need a hand to get up, and maybe I did.

Marji said I was sitting down because I was worried about the wind blowing me off. I think that rock was wide enough that I didn’t worry about that. However, I did climb up to the top of the world once on a trail in Shenandoah Park, WV, where I was sitting down because I felt much happier that way.

I love to hike trails in the parks we visit. My husband not so much, but back when he could, he always went along. We picked this trail that said it was fairly difficult. The fairly should have been majorly. But once you are on a trail, it’s hard to give up and turn around. We did some rock scrambling to get to the top where I sat down for my picture. I did feel the wind too strong. Actually, I don’t remember if the wind was blowing or not, but we were up high on a narrow ridge of rocks. This was right before I had to leap from that rock over to another rock. It wasn’t a far leap, but it was a leap and not a step. I like taking steps on my walks, not leaps. But the view was gorgeous. Darrell looks like the king of the mountain in his picture. I probably took it while I was still sitting down. LOL.

But now that I’ve confessed having to hold onto the rocks on that trek, it’s time to finish out our Caption game with the picture up top of Riggs, one of my granddogs.

Did you know that there are over 300 words for love in canine? – Gabriel Zevin

I like dogs. You always know what a dog is thinking. It has four moods. Happy, sad, cross, and concentrating. Also, dogs are faithful and they do not tell lies because they cannot talk.” – Mark Haddon

Riggs is a very expressive fellow and I just know you all are going to come up with some great words for him to be ready to say. I just watched the movie Up with my grandsons this week and smiled once again over the dog that had on a collar to translate his dog thoughts and whines into human words. So that’s what you can do. Look at Riggs and let me know what you think he’s saying.

So what do you think Riggs is trying to tell me?

The deadline to enter the book giveaway (3 winners will get their choices of one of my books plus a grab bag book) is Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at midnight, EST. You must be at least 18 years old to enter. I’ll select the winners by random drawing using Random.org. Each comment you may have made got a number. The odds aren’t too bad, but vary according to how many times you entered and how many other people suggested captions. I’ll notify the winners by email and announce the winners here on Wednesday. I usually only give first names and sometimes a last initial if I have two entrants with the same first name.

I hope you’ve enjoyed playing my Caption game. I love hearing from each and every one of you. We’ll play something else here for more chances to win a book sometime soon.

  1. “I’m sitting. I’m smiling. You going to say ‘Whose a good boy…Riggs is a good boy’, and take me for a walk?”

  2. I heard you had birds and squirrels here. They are my favorites! Can we please go out for a walk now, please? Please?

  3. “Cheese?”
This is the exact look I got from Ollie a little while ago. He was sleeping in the living room, when I went to the kitchen to get a piece of cheese for a snack. When I shut the refrigerator, he was suddenly sitting there with this exact look on his face. I think his big ears let him hear a cheese package being opened across town. And he definitely knows the difference between cheese or something else, like yogurt (that he hates!) Riggs looks like he’s hoping for cheese too!

They do know the sound of those packages opening on their favorite treats, Lavon. Riggs, believe it or not, begs for lettuce and watermelon rind. I’m sure he’d eat cheese too. I’m guessing Ollie got his piece of cheese too. 🙂

  4. “Visiting Grandma always makes me smile, especially when she gives me treats and takes me on walks to see them strange creatures who say “moo” instead of talking like a proper animal should.”

I was a cheerleader for 3 years in middle school, but never managed to get good at the flips or cartwheels either…. luckily in the younger grades you only had to be able to jump around, support other girls in the pyramids (I preferred staying on the ground) and learn the cheers. 🙂

I did some of that elementary school cheerleading too, Hope. We just yelled and as you say, jumped around a little. Cheering is more serious in most schools today. The cheerleaders have to practice and practice and practice some more nearly all year long. And then they get to go to maybe one or two competitions. Along with cheering the teams on.

Funny you should say that about those strange creatures that say “moo.” I was keeping Riggs once. He usually listens and comes if you tell him too. But this day we went for a walk. He saw the cows and ran barking toward them. It happened that we had a fiesty old cow that didn’t take anything off a dog. She took off after Riggs and some of her girlfriends joined in the chase. Riggs took off over the hill with them in pursuit. I’m thinking I’ve let my daughter’s dog get killed. By cows. But eventually Riggs must have shaken the cows and came back. He wasn’t quite as chipper but he survived. We stayed away from the cows after that.

      1. I went to one Cheerleading Competition and still have the trophy from it, our group made 4th place-which was better than nothing. 🙂

I am glad that Riggs was okay after is run-in with the cows. That is funny!

It wasn’t funny at the time, Hope. I was not wanting to have to tell my daughter and son-in-law that their dog had been pummeled by a cow. But looking back, it does make me smile.

No cheerleading competitions for me, but my granddaughters have competed for their schools.

  5. “Did you say ” walk”? Now? Are we leaving right now? Let’s go! I don’t need shoes. Why do you need shoes? It’s time to go…now. We need to go now!”

I have a German shepherd/husky mix and she has this conversation with me daily!😏 This expression looks very familiar…

Love it, Robin. Frankie says some of that to me too when I tell him I have to put on my walking shoes. Riggs is surely saying the same. He’s so smart that we used to be able to spell thinks like walk, but then he learned to spell. LOL.
