Last Chance to Play My Random Line Game

I’m sorry I’m late posting the last installment of my Random Line Game. I know this is Thursday and not Wednesday, but I’ve been off the grid up in a little of the Appalachian area Aunt Perdie loved here in Kentucky. I had a few days to enjoy the beauty of the hills with the fall decorated trees covering the hillsides. Here’s one of the photos I took looking down toward the Cumberland River.

Every fall for the past fifteen or so years (except that better forgotten year of 2020,) my husband and I have gone on a family trip with his siblings and spouses to enjoy some time together to share stories and grandkid pictures. We rent a house where we enjoy our shared cooking talents, play some games, and laugh a lot. We have so much fun having a few uninterrupted days to strengthen those family ties.

I did take my computer with every intention of posting something, but those internet signals can get weak when you head off into the wilderness. That wasn’t so bad. Sometimes it’s nice to be unconnected. So that’s why I’m late with the post this week. I could have gotten it ready to go before I left, but that didn’t happen. Too busy doing everything else. Our preacher preached at me last Sunday about how everybody needs a quiet time. Maybe my days away were a quiet time in a way even though we were everything but quiet as we visited together. Of course, one of my sisters-in-law and I did go walking up and down some hills. Some of those hills were so steep that panting was all the noise we were making. LOL.

But back to Aunt Perdie and the Random Line Game. Many of you nailed the answer last week. Hope even opened her book to the very page where I’d found the random line in Along a Storied Trail. It was the scene where Coralee showed up at Perdita Sweet’s door in a snowstorm.

Eight of you got it right and Connie guessed it even though she hadn’t even read the story. She needs to, don’t you think? But I think she might of have peeked at everybody else’s answers. Nancy was the first to get the answer and she seemed very sure. So, I’m thinking she wasn’t just guessing, but remembered about Aunt Perdie and Coralee too.

Coralee was one of those unexpected characters who sometimes show up in my stories. Aunt Perdie was sort of that way too. Oh, I had Perdita Sweet’s name on my character list before I started writing. I knew she was going to be an old mountain woman who might give Tansy, my book woman, trouble. I didn’t know she was going to push her cat off her lap, get up out of her rocking chair and become such a big part of the story. I really didn’t know how much I was going to enjoy writing from the viewpoint of a cranky old spinster.  Hmm, not sure what that tells about me. LOL.

Coralee turned out to have an important part in the story too. That’s sometimes how the creative process goes. One idea leads to another idea and somehow the story grows and embraces each character.

Thanks to all of you who have played this new game with me. As Lisa said in one of her comments, it’s not that easy a game. But I hope you found it fun.

Are you ready for the last random line? Might be another easy one. We’ll see.

That child was going to be hard to shut out of his heart.

Since I’m a day late posting this, I’m going to extend the deadline for entries to midnight Saturday, October 29, 2022. That should give you time to post your comments of your idea of which book had this particular line.

Kentucky Book Festival – October 29, 2022 – 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Oh, and if you’re in the Lexington, KY area, the Kentucky Book Festival is this Saturday at the JosephBeth Booksellers. You can read all about the 150 or so authors who are going to be there with tables full of books and eager to talk to readers. Here’s where you can find out more. Kentucky Book Festival.

Lots of great activities for kids too. In fact, according to the information on the Festival’s website, each child 12 years old and under who attends the book festival is eligible to receive a voucher for one free book to take home! If you take an eligible child to the festival you have to ask a book festival volunteer inside the Children’s Authors Tent to get a voucher for the free book that will only be redeemable on Saturday, October 29th. Supply is limited, but what fun that would be for a kid to be able to pick out a book to take home with him or her.

If you do make it to the Festival, I hope you’ll stop by my book table to say hi. I’d love to see you.

And now, I’m ready for those random line guesses.

  1. I know I’m late with this, no problem. I literally just finished Where The Meadow Blooms this Saturday morning. I remember your Random line. Dirk says that line to himself thinking about Sienna. The way you wrote about Dirk’s hurt with Annaliese was so vivid it brought tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat. Thanks for the book.

I thought this last random line would be an easier one because readers might have read my story more recently, Maryann. I’m so glad you enjoyed going to Meadowland with my characters and lived their stories with them.

  2. My guess was first going to be Angel Sister. But it sounds like Where The Meadow Blooms is probably the right answer. Ann, you really do have some Wonderful photo’s, and I especially liked the Fall colors in the last photo.
