I love Spring. I also love summer and fall and even winter. That narrows things down a little, doesn’t it? But I wouldn’t really want to live where there weren’t seasons. Where it was always warm. Where the sun shone all summer and only made cameo appearances in the winter. I love the Spring sunshine and when the flowers burst into bloom and chase away the last of the winter blues. So here are some quotes to keep you springing through Spring.
The day the Lord created hope was probably the same day He created Spring. …Bern Williams
What sunshine is to flowers, smiles are to humanity. …Joseph Addison
Life is like riding a bicycle. You don’t fall off unless you stop pedaling. …Claude Pepper
So hope all of you keep pedaling and have a good trip. Maybe you were able to pedal past some lilac bushes while they were blooming to take a deep breath to get that great lilac scent all the way down to your toes. As those of you who have read my Hollyhill books know, that was Jocie’s favorite scent in Scent of Lilacs.
Then it won’t be long until you can roll your car window down and drive by some locust trees in bloom. Ahh! We had locust trees all over our yard where I grew up. And of course, I sometimes stepped on the locust thorns when I was barefoot in the summertime, but Spring smelled good! I love that scent just like David told Jocie he did in that same Hollyhill book. The scent even played a big part in his call to preach that he got while down in a submarine during World War II. You’ll have to read that scene to figure out how the scent of locust blooms could show up in submarine deep in the sea.
Then there’s some kind of bush that grows wild out in the field. I have no idea what it is. You can’t even see it bloom unless you look really close, but it does have a deliciously sweet scent when it is in bloom. I caught that scent in the air the other day when I was walking the dogs. I still don’t know what it is, but since it seems to have spread rapidly, I’m sure that despite its sweet scent, it’s probably an invasive bush that we might wish wasn’t here on the farm.
But isn’t that the way with many things? The good mixed with the not so good. The locust blooms along with the sticky thorns. Roses with thorns. The sweet-smelling bush taking over the fencerows. The pretty yellow buttercup blooming in the pasture that cows won’t eat because it’s poisonous to them. But you know what, I can’t think of any bad thing about those lilacs except that my bushes haven’t thrived the last few years the way they did in the past.
What are some of your favorite sights and scents of Spring?
