Some New Year’s Thoughts for 2024

Begin doing what you want to do now. We are not living in eternity. We have only this moment, sparkling like a star in our hand and melting like a snowflake.   —Francis Bacon Sr.

Do you make New Year’s resolutions? If so, I guess this is the time to come up with some. I’ve made plenty in my time. Even maybe kept some of them – at least for a while.  I haven’t come up with any this year. I do have goals but that seems different to me than resolutions. I have the goal of writing my new book and meeting my deadline. To reach that I’m going to have to really get down to work starting next year. Thank goodness next year will be here in a few hours. With the new year, I’m hoping for more inspiration to bring my story to life.

But tonight, I want to share some quotes I’ve collected over the years for my church bulletins to celebrate the fun and excitement of a new year.

Each New Year, we have before us a brand new book containing 365 blank pages. Let us fill them with all the forgotten things from last year—the words we forgot to say, the love we forgot to show, and the charity we forgot to offer.    ~Peggy Toney Horton

I like thinking about the new year as a new book that we can write. Each page, alias each day, gives us a new chance to do what we want to do, to say those right words, to love more fully.

I came across this next a few years ago. Not sure about the source, but love the thoughts.

Welcome to Flight #2024.

We are prepared to take off into the New Year. Please make sure your Attitude and Blessings are secured and locked in an upright position. All self-destructive devices should be turned off at this time. All negativity, hurt and discouragement should be put away. Should we lose Altitude under pressure, during the flight, reach up and pull down a Prayer. Prayers will automatically be activated by Faith. Once your Faith is activated you can assist other passengers. There will be NO BAGGAGE allowed on this flight. The Captain (GOD) has cleared us for takeoff. Destination: PEACE AND JOY.

Prayer is a great way to handle those bumps in the flight through a new year.

“The New Year lies before you like a spotless tract of snow; Be careful how you tread on it, for every mark will show.”    ~Prayer of Faith Messenger

I enjoy going out walking in a field of new snow. This is my sweet dog, Oscar, thinking about where we are headed next. Any tracks we made that day in the pure white covering were there to be seen. But what if we could see the tracks we leave in our everyday life? That always makes me think of that old song about leaving a lot of happy tracks as we go down life’s road.

“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re doing something.” —Neil Gaiman

I don’t really wish mistakes on you, but we all make them. So, it’s good to think about learning and growing from them and from doing new things.

New Year’s Day is a good time to fix one’s eyes on the only One who knows what the year is to hold. ~Elisabeth Elliot

Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year. —Ralph Waldo Emerson

I especially like that last one. I hope every day is a best day for you.

Happy New Year!!

Which quote do you like best or do you have a different favorite you would like to share?

P.S. I picked the last winner in my Christmas book giveaway. Judi T from Missouri was the winner. She picked my book, Angel SisterShe says the Rosey Corner books are favorites of hers. I always love to hear that since I did enjoy going to Rosey Corner for some stories about those Merritt sisters. Thanks to all of you who joined in the fun of commenting on my posts. Wish I could send you all books, but I will be doing more giveaways soon. I’ll send out a new newsletter next year too. That could be tomorrow or next week. Can you believe it’s 2024? Seems just yesterday we were worrying about 2000.

I like this one. I think this is meant for us older folks. Do it while you can, you never know what’s just around the corner.

It is something we older folks might need to keep in mind, Connie, but you know none of us are promised tomorrow although we expect to have those more days. That goes for young people too, I think. They also need to take advantage of whatever opportunities come their way. To follow their dreams.

  2. I really like the Welcome to Flight #2024 and would love to share it with our priest, Father Ray. He would enjoy it so much as he shares quotes, comics and funny stories with us each week before his sermon. Thank you for sharing all of these wonderful quotes.

Share anything you like, Becky. However, I don’t know the original author of this New Year Flight piece. It floats around on the internet. I first saw it several years ago and no author was given then either.

  3. For the new year, my quote is a Bible verse:
“Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.” Proverbs 19:21
This reminds me to go ahead and make my plans, but make them in pencil and pray for God’s will throughout this year. I tend to become anxious when my plans don’t work out. Reminding myself that “the purpose of the Lord will stand” is very comforting and allows me to be okay when something doesn’t happen the way I thought it should. 😊

Great thinking, Janette, and sensible. We make plans, but we can’t always see those plans through for this or that reason. The Lord knows the plans He has for us. That’s why Jeremiah 29:11 is a favorite verse for many.
