Do you remember that guy on the Popeye cartoons who always said he wanted a hamburger on Tuesday when it was Wednesday or something? Oops, looks like I’m not remembering it too well myself.
So, of course, I had to go look it up. His name was J. Wellington Wimpy and his famous hamburger line was “I’d gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.” Who knows where I got the idea that somehow that always made him a day late and maybe a dollar short.
I’m not exactly the dollar short, but then again, who isn’t a dollar short these days? Dollar short or not, I am a day late posting some Wednesday words. Part of the reason is that with the snow keeping me here on the farm and with our church services canceled two Sundays in a row, it’s hard to keep up with what day it is. I know, that’s what calendars are for and I have one of those. Actually a couple of those. Not to mention the nice reminder of what day it is on the bottom of my computer screen. For people like me, they might add the day of the week. 🙂
I did remember the hamburger guy was called Wimpy. I didn’t remember his whole name. I mostly remembered about the hamburgers and that he was Popeye’s friend and always something of a coward. Is that why we say somebody is a wimp if they don’t act strong enough or is that why Wimpy was named wimpy? I could look that up too, but I’m going to let it remain a question for another day.
Anyway, Wimpy was portrayed as a mooch which is the gladly pay you on Tuesday part. I don’t think it was ever Tuesday for him to pay off his hamburger debts. The information about him on the internet says he had a deceptively high level of intelligence. I was never a big Popeye cartoon fan, so I didn’t remember that. He was most famous for his love of hamburgers and there was even a Wimpy hamburger restaurant once.
The Wimpy character turned 90 in 2021 and claimed to still love his hamburgers.
Now that you know more than you probably wanted to know about Popeye’s friend Wimpy and that you are probably now having the Popeye the Sailorman song running through your head and thinking of spinach, I’ll get back to my original plan for this post. Some smiles for my Wednesday post on Thursday.
This is one of the favorite pass-arounds I’ve found on Facebook. Whether there’s any truth to the source or not, it might still make you smile and kids do say the darndest things.
Kids Say the Darndest Things
A first grade teacher gave the children in her class the first half of a proverb and asked them to come up with the remainder of the proverb.
~Better to be safe than … Punch a 5th grader
~Strike while the … Bug is close
~It’s always darkest before … Daylight Savings Time
~Don’t bite the hand that … looks dirty
~No news is … impossible
~A miss is as good as a … Mr.
~If you lie down with dogs, you’ll … stink in the morning
~Love all, trust … me
~Happy the bride who … gets all the presents
~A penny saved is … not much
~Two’s company, three’s … the Musketeers
~Laugh and the whole world laughs with you, cry and … you have to blow your nose
~You get out of something what you … see pictured on the box
Hope you found a smile or two in those kid versions of proverbs.
Did you know all the original ends of those proverbs? I did except for Happy the bride. Hmm. Happy the bride who has a groom???
P.S. Those are my cute kindergartners or first graders in that tree up top. They are both in college now.

I thoroughly enjoyed this week’s letter even if it came on Thursday! 😃. Thank you for bringing some smiles my way. I do remember Wimpy on Popeye & I did enjoy watching Popeye cartoons in the late afternoon before supper! Thanks for enlightening us a little more about Wimpy!
I LOVED the responses that kids gave to the proverbs that the teacher gave them! What cute responses!
Lastly what cutie pies sitting in the tree! I remember when my husband took a similar picture of our oldest daughter when she was less than 2; she’s now 54!
Thanks Ann for the fun fact newsletter this week! I will need to keep that one so I can reread it on a dreary day which we don’t have many of here in Florida!
Blessings,
Betsy
